The Iranian currency fell today to its lowest level in history against the dollar, amid increasing American economic pressures on Tehran after nearly six months of war. The Iranian rial traded at 1.992 million rials to the dollar in the unofficial market, according to what was published by the website "Al Arabiya.net".

The Iranian currency has declined by about 4.5% since U.S. President Donald Trump announced last week the launch of a "crushing economic operation" against Iran, while the unofficial site "TGJU" showed that the currency exceeded the two million rials per dollar mark yesterday, before reducing its losses at closing, according to what Bloomberg reported.

Increasing Pressures

The currency has faced a wave of increasing pressures due to Washington's efforts to isolate the Iranian economy by threatening Tehran's remaining trading partners, tightening restrictions on its main ports in the Gulf, and strangling oil exports, which represent one of the most important sources of foreign currency revenue. Iranian Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati acknowledged last week that Iranian crude oil exports have effectively stopped.

Day of Reckoning

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Pisonet emphasized in an article published today by the Financial Times that the goal is to "cut every economic artery that keeps the Iranian regime alive," warning of the beginning of what he described as the "day of economic reckoning" with the dawn. The Iranian newspaper Donya-e-Eqtesad, which specializes in financial affairs, attributed the decline of the rial to the disruption of foreign currency transfers and a decrease in exports, coinciding with an increase in demand for imports and rising inflation expectations.
