The ambitions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the field of artificial intelligence are entering a new phase. Through government entities, vital sectors, and private institutions, artificial intelligence today transcends the realm of experimental projects and proof of concept to become part of the systems that shape daily operations and enhance national competitiveness in the long term.
As thousands of leaders in the technology sector gather to participate in LEAP 2026, the discussion is increasingly shifting towards practical questions related to implementation, infrastructure, talent, and governance.
The question that must be asked firstWith the penetration of artificial intelligence into various aspects of technology, and when the conversation shifts to the value it can achieve, Lakshimi Narayanan, General Manager of Al-Mana Information Technology in Saudi Arabia, says, "Organizations that realize actual value are those that first define what they want to change before deciding what they want to purchase."
These companies set performance metrics before starting implementation, redesign processes around technology rather than introducing new technologies to old processes, and then assign responsibility to the management directly accountable for achieving results.
He added, "The decision made several times a month is far more valuable than a strategically important decision that is made only twice a year."
What will energy supplies enable? The physical infrastructure underpins all the decisions enabled by artificial intelligence, while data centers themselves face certain limits and potentials. Sami Al-Faraj, Chief Technology Officer for the Middle East and Africa at Submer, explains that these facilities have long surpassed their traditional classification. He said, "When 66 out of 96 strategic goals for Saudi Vision 2030 depend on data and artificial intelligence, the infrastructure that powers these systems is no longer just an IT asset; it has become national infrastructure, and it should be designed on that basis."
For decades, facility design came first, and then servers were equipped later. Al-Faraj says, "Artificial intelligence turns this equation upside down, as the roadmap for computing accelerators now dictates the design of the building." Today's single rack consumes more than 100 kilowatts, which is more than what ten racks combined from older generations consume, and it generates amounts of heat that air cooling systems cannot handle.
How does this reflect on operations?Rahul Misra, Senior Vice President and General Manager for the Middle East and Africa at IFS, works with sectors where short delays can lead to real financial losses. He said, "For Gulf countries, where asset-intensive industries dominate the economy, industrial artificial intelligence integrates smart capabilities directly into operational environments, transforming how organizations manage their most critical operations. The biggest difference is in independent operational coordination."
He added, "The oil, gas, manufacturing, utilities, and logistics sectors operate at scales where any delay in coordination directly impacts profit margins and reliability."
Systems that manage suppliers, inventory, and maintenance schedules across interconnected assets help prevent small issues from escalating and spreading across the supply network, while also reducing wasted hours due to unplanned downtime.
However, the same tools have also contributed to accelerating attackers' ability to breach systems. Maher Jadallah, Vice President for the Middle East and Africa at Tenable, believes that discovering vulnerabilities is just the easier part of the task.
He said, "Discovering a vulnerability is like identifying one symptom of a disease, while managing exposure to risk is the treatment." Commonly used assessment systems classify up to 60% of vulnerabilities as high or critical risk, while only about 3% of vulnerabilities involve a real risk of exploitation by attackers. Attacks often do not rely on a single vulnerability; instead, attackers combine limited vulnerabilities with exposed cloud settings and excessive access permissions, then exploit them to reach a valuable target.
He added, "By the time the alert is issued, the automated attacker may have already explored the network," emphasizing that the solution lies in proactive fortification before an attack occurs.
For most employees, this transformation will be less apparent. Murad Ali, Head of Logitech's business in the Middle East and Central Asia, points to the role that office equipment plays in improving audio and visual quality, facilitating setup, and connecting participants in meeting rooms with colleagues working from home.
He said, "Modern offices today are becoming smarter," as devices go beyond their traditional role as simple accessories to become more adaptable to users' needs and work environments. Occupancy sensors and environmental conditions today help manage meeting rooms directly, while cloud management systems give IT teams the ability to monitor and control devices and access other data, such as meeting frequency and comparing attendance numbers with room capacity and office utilization rates.
He added, "Artificial intelligence should be viewed as a tool to enhance collaboration among humans and improve employee experiences," noting that this transformation is as much about inclusivity and sustainability as it is about efficiency.
Narayanan expects that the terminology used will evolve to keep pace with this reality over the next three years, to the point where no one will talk about an "artificial intelligence project" anymore. He said, "It will simply become the way a use case or specific task is designed, and only then can it be said that the technology has truly reached a stage of maturity."
