The annual inflation rate for the total republic in Egypt rose to 12.8% in September 2026, compared to 12.7% in August, while monthly inflation accelerated to 1.5%, driven by increases in the prices of vegetables, fruits, meat, and poultry, according to data from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics released on Saturday.
The data showed an increase in the general consumer price index for the total republic to 294.2 points in September, with vegetables leading the monthly increases, having risen by 15.1%, followed by fruits at 2.6%, meat and poultry at 2.5%, and fish and seafood at 1.2%.
The food and beverage sector recorded a monthly increase of 3.2%, while prices for grains, bread, dairy products, cheese, and eggs each increased by 0.4%, reflecting ongoing pressures on some essential goods that constitute a major part of household spending.
The increases extended to other sectors, as prices for furniture, household equipment, and maintenance rose by 1.2%, clothing and footwear by 0.8%, and housing, water, electricity, gas, and fuel by 0.8%. Various goods and services recorded an increase of 0.7%, while healthcare and culture and entertainment each rose by 0.4%, and restaurants and hotels by 0.3%.
In contrast, prices for audio and visual equipment, photography, and information technology decreased by 1.1%, and prices for organized tourism trips fell by 0.6% during the month.
On an annual basis, food and beverage prices increased by 7.9%, despite varying movements among their components; vegetable prices surged by 30.9%, fruit by 7.2%, fish and seafood by 6.6%, meat and poultry by 6.2%, and oils and fats by 5.5%. In contrast, prices for dairy products, cheese, and eggs decreased by 1.3%.
The housing, water, electricity, gas, and fuel sector recorded the highest annual increase among the main sectors included in the data, at 29.6%, driven by a 27.5% rise in actual housing rent and a 22.6% increase in electricity, gas, and other fuel materials.
Transportation and communication prices rose by 21.3%, education by 20%, culture and entertainment by 15.4%, and furniture and household equipment by 15.1%. Prices for restaurants and hotels increased by 12.8%, clothing and footwear by 12.7%, various goods and services by 10.8%, communications by 10.4%, and healthcare by 5.2%.
The figures reflect a clear disparity between the rates of price increases; while the general annual inflation recorded a limited increase from 12.7% to 12.8%, prices rose by 1.5% in September compared to August, with notable increases in specific groups, particularly vegetables and housing.
Annual inflation is measured by comparing the prices of goods and services to their levels in the same month of the previous year, while monthly inflation measures the change compared to the previous month directly. Therefore, the limited increase in the annual rate does not mean a decrease in prices, but rather indicates a continued rise at a slightly higher annual pace, while the monthly reading reveals the trend of prices in recent times.
These developments are significant in light of the impact of food, housing, and energy prices on household budgets, as well as the relationship between the inflation trajectory and monetary policy decisions, borrowing costs, and purchasing power. However, determining the direction of inflation in the coming months requires monitoring subsequent data, along with developments in commodity prices, production costs, transportation, and exchange rates.
